Qercus has a long history of publication for a computer magazine with ancestors back to the early 1980s - Acorn User, BBC Micro User and A&B Computing. All these ancestors went through a number of changes of name (Micro User, Acorn Computing, BBC Acorn User, Acorn User, Archimedes World) and were joined by other publications including Electron User, Let's Compute!, &c as Acorn User.
All these publications were general purpose magazines for the Acorn/RISCOS world. When Acorn Publisher took over all these at the end of 2003 it brought in a nine year record of publication dedicated to illustrating how RISC OS computers can help present high-quality work; its core concerns were with graphics, desktop publishing and web design software. Qercus is a magazine about good design and general computing with articles produced to appeal to ordinary RISC OS computer users. But perhaps all RISC OS computer users are extra-ordinary! The name Qercus shows its genesis as a magazine for those using Acorn computers; Qercus is a slightly misspelled version of the namefor Oak. Now we find that users of other computers and software read the magazine for its sound advice on design. As web designers begin to appreciate the need to cater for all readers they will find our experience, as users of a minority computer platform, an invaluable resource. AP On-line was originally designed as a web-based complement to Acorn Publisher but it will now be used to showcase new articles from Qercus and archive material from Acorn Publisher and Acorn User. It will be more than just an advertisement for Qercus. It will be a magazine in its own right. The strength of Qercus is in its team of contributors; many of those connected with Acorn Publisher continue with the new magazine and we are gathering new writers to expand to fill the new areas of interest.
